Background Information
OWWL Library System provides cost-saving technology solutions and computer and networking support to member libraries. All technology support requests must come in the form of a support ticket to OWWL Library System staff.
Available Technology Support
OWWL Library System provides:
- Efficient and high-quality support and troubleshooting for computers and networks.
- The ability to purchase reasonably-priced and procurement-compliant computers and technology through centralized technology purchasing.
- Access to IT consulting services to support technology planning, bandwidth adoption, and networking.
- Access and basic support to our prefabricated WordPress website template.
- Technology training for library staff through online training and Niche Academy.
Supported Computers and Requirements
OWWL Library System provides support for the following computers:
- Windows computers with a spinning disk drive that were manufactured fewer than five years ago.
- Windows computers with a Solid-State Drive (SSD) that were manufactured fewer than five years ago. Special consideration for support beyond five years may be granted at the discretion of the Computer and Network Services Department, depending on the machine’s capabilities and the results of a security evaluation.
- Repurposed Linux computers may receive support beyond these timeframes at the discretion of the Computer and Network Services Department.
To receive support, member libraries must ensure that:
- Staff computers comply with the Systems Access and Confidentiality of Library Records Policy. Any non-compliant computers will be addressed in accordance with the System and Member Library Relationship Policy.
- All computers (staff and public) are purchased and configured through the mediated PC purchasing program. Computers purchased outside this program will not be supported.
OWWL Library System reserves the right to decline support for any device or software purchased outside the scope of this policy or outside the available centralized technology purchasing program.
Recommendations to Member Libraries
Libraries are encouraged to establish a technology reserve fund to plan and save for future computer purchases and upgrades. Setting aside funds in advance makes replacement predictable and sustainable. With a healthy technology infrastructure in mind, OWWL Library System recommends replacing or upgrading approximately 20% of a library’s computers each year. This planned approach ensures reliable service, maintains system compatibility, and helps avoid unexpected costs.
