Code of Ethics

The OWWL Library System, chartered by New York State, supports and strengthens public library services across Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, and Livingston Counties. In our work, we uphold the mission, vision, and values of the System while serving our member libraries with professionalism, integrity, and respect.

Guiding Principles

1. Commitment to Access – We promote equitable access to information, technology, and resources for all people. We oppose discrimination and barriers to service, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to read, learn, and grow.

2. Respect for Intellectual Freedom – We defend the freedom to seek and share information without restriction. We safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of those who use library services.

3. Service to Community –We work in partnership with our 42 member libraries, honoring their independence while providing collaborative leadership and support. We act with transparency, accountability, and fairness in all decisions and services.

4. Professional Integrity –We conduct ourselves honestly and responsibly. We avoid conflicts of interest, treat colleagues and partners with respect, and sustain the trust placed in us by our libraries and communities.

5. Stewardship and Responsibility – We use the resources of the OWWL Library System wisely and efficiently. We are accountable for our actions, decisions, and the outcomes of our work.

6. Commitment to Growth –We value continuous learning, adaptability, and innovation. We strive to improve our services and to support the evolving needs of libraries and the communities they serve.

This Code of Ethics reflects the mission and values of the OWWL Library System. It is a statement of professional principles that guides staff conduct and supports our shared commitment to equitable and excellent library service.
